Erdoğan: If You've Got It, Flaunt It

There's no point of course in building a spectacular 1100-room presidential über-palace if you are not planning to showcase it, any seasoned exhibitionist will attest to that, and that's exactly what the larger than life Turkish leader par excellence, Tayyip Erdogan, has started doing. And what better way to showcase your palatial digs than putting on a show.

On the occasion then of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas's visit, a wonderfully tailored dress show was planned featuring the 16 states founded throughout Turkey's history (fictional or not) as represented in 16 rugged costumed performers. The show may have had no direct link whatsoever with Abbas' visit but what's that got to do with anything? A good show is good show. And it must certainly go on, no matter who's visiting. And considering the state of the performing arts in Palestine, it was certainly a royal treat for Abbas. Not to mention a very educational opportunity as well, what with 22 centuries of Turkish history condescend in 16 Halloweeny dressed men. Plus, a fledging nation state like Palestine, needs all the inspiration it can get to forge its way into statehood, fashion tips included.

Future shows may include:

  • A dressage event (indoors) with 16 stallion-grade horses representing the aforementioned states.

  • A demure yet spectacular musical number with dancers representing famous Ottoman sultans.

  • A cook show of famous dishes from the 16 Turkish states (incl. a vegetarian option)

  • A reenactment of the fall of Constantinople.

  • An operatic performance detailing the siege of Vienna by the Ottomans.

  • A reenactment (with puppets) of the discovery of America by Muslim traders.

  • A performance of the Eurovision song contest Turkish winner (though with considerable more clothes on the dancers).
